Ford Transit vs. Mercedes Sprinter
If you have spent any time researching custom vans, you know that the choice usually comes down to two main contenders: the Ford Transit and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Both are incredible vehicles, but they offer very different experiences once you get behind the wheel.
At The Good Van, we work with both platforms. We don’t think one is "better" than the other in a vacuum. Instead, it is about which one matches your travel style, your budget, and how you plan to maintain the vehicle over the next decade. Here is how they stack up when you are looking at them through the lens of a premium build.
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter: The Gold Standard
The Sprinter has long been the favorite for high-end custom conversions. It carries a certain prestige, but its reputation is built on more than just the badge.
The Driving Feel Driving a Sprinter feels intentional. It is a diesel-dominant platform, which means it has a lot of low-end torque for climbing mountain passes even when it is fully loaded with cabinetry and water tanks. The cabin is quiet, the seats are designed for 10-hour days, and the safety tech is top-tier.
The Customization Factor Because the Sprinter has been the go-to for so long, the aftermarket support is massive. Whether you want a specific roof rack, a specialized suspension kit, or custom window flares, there is a high-quality part designed specifically for the Sprinter. It is the easiest "canvas" to work with for a boutique builder.
The Trade-off The main hurdle is the maintenance. While these engines are built to last hundreds of thousands of miles, you generally need to take them to a specialized Mercedes-Benz Sprinter technician. Depending on where you travel, finding a qualified mechanic can take a bit more planning.
The Ford Transit: The Modern Challenger
In recent years, the Ford Transit has become a serious rival to the Sprinter. It offers a more "car-like" experience and some modern conveniences that are hard to ignore.
The Power and Handling Most people choose the Transit for the EcoBoost engine. It is incredibly peppy and makes merging onto highways feel effortless. It also uses a gasoline engine, which some travelers prefer because gas is generally cheaper and more available than diesel in remote areas.
The Service Network This is the Transit’s biggest "pro." There is a Ford dealership in almost every small town in America. If you have an issue while you are on a cross-country road trip, you are rarely more than an hour away from someone who can fix it. For many of our clients, that peace of mind is the deciding factor.
The Trade-off The Transit has a slightly more "utilitarian" feel in the cabin compared to the refined interior of a Mercedes. It also has a lower ground clearance in the rear due to the shock mounts, which is something to keep in mind if you plan on doing a lot of rugged off-roading.
Comparing the AWD Systems
Both vans now offer impressive All-Wheel Drive (AWD) options.
The Mercedes system is legendary for its capability in snow and sand. It sits a bit higher off the ground, which gives you that commanding view of the road. The Ford Intelligent AWD is also fantastic and excels at providing traction on wet or icy pavement without you having to think about it. If you aren't planning on doing heavy rock crawling, both will get you to 99% of the campsites you're looking for.
Which one should you choose?
It really comes down to your priorities.
Choose the Sprinter if you value a quiet, premium driving experience, want the best off-road potential, and don't mind a more specialized maintenance schedule.
Choose the Transit if you want a familiar, powerful gasoline engine and the security of knowing you can get it serviced almost anywhere.
At the end of the day, the "best" van is the one that gets you out there. Whether it has a Ford or a Mercedes badge on the grill, once we finish the interior, it is going to feel like home.
